Pope Leo XIV Emphasizes AI, Social Justice, and Francis’ Legacy
Pope Leo XIV, elected as the first U.S.-born pontiff, has signaled that his papacy will build upon the legacy of Pope Francis with a focus on humility, social justice, and the evolving challenges posed by technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). In his first formal address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo emphasized a continued commitment to Vatican II reforms and called on the Church to confront modern issues with courage, care for the marginalized, and collaborative leadership.
Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, Pope Leo selected his name to honor Pope Leo XIII, known for championing Catholic social teaching during the first Industrial Revolution. Drawing a parallel, Leo XIV identified the current wave of AI development as the new frontier requiring theological and ethical attention. He described AI and automation as profound challenges to labor, human dignity, and justice, calling on the Church to respond with renewed missionary zeal and moral clarity.
Speaking in fluent Italian, Leo XIV praised Pope Francis for his dedication and simplicity and urged cardinals to uphold this “precious legacy.” He also expressed personal humility, acknowledging the weight of the papacy and the need for fraternal support from the Church’s senior leaders. The meeting took place in the Vatican’s synod hall, an unusual choice that symbolized his emphasis on collegiality.
Leo’s remarks affirmed his vision of a Church deeply engaged with the contemporary world, committed to dialogue, and grounded in compassion. Following the meeting, the new pope visited the Augustinian sanctuary of Madonna del Buon Consiglio—highlighting his spiritual roots and devotion to Mary.
Pope Leo XIV’s installation Mass is scheduled for May 18, with tens of thousands expected to attend. For the full story, read the original article on CNN.
