Rethinking Tech in Faith: Social Media as a Spiritual Tool

The evolving role of social media in the lives of Latter-day Saints raises an important question—not whether it’s good or bad, but how it’s being used. Church leaders, including President Russell M. Nelson, have long warned of the spiritual dangers posed by unintentional or excessive engagement with digital platforms. In his 2018 address, President Nelson cautioned that prioritizing social media over the Spirit puts individuals at risk of loneliness and spiritual disconnection. Yet, he has also emphasized the potential of these platforms to uplift and inspire, urging members in 2020 to use social media as a “gratitude journal” to share positivity.

Joseph Kerry, a Church educator and guest on a recent Church News podcast, echoed this balanced view. He believes that youth and young adults have the heart and discipline to use technology responsibly. Kerry sees social media as a tool that, when used intentionally, can help individuals feel seen, valued, and spiritually fortified. He emphasized that putting out sincere, encouraging content not only benefits others but also helps the creator maintain a sense of peace and purpose.

Church leaders continue to model how to use digital tools constructively. From sharing testimonies to inviting others to “come and see,” social media has become a modern extension of the Church’s missionary work. Apostles like Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf and Elder Neil L. Andersen have encouraged members to share authentic expressions of faith online and to center their content on Jesus Christ.

Still, risks remain. Elder Gary E. Stevenson warned of the “spiritual eclipse” that can occur when digital distractions crowd out gospel light. Kerry added that constant comparison on social media can undermine individual worth and obscure the truth that each person is a unique child of God.

The takeaway is not to reject social media, but to approach it with intention and discernment. By creating and consuming content that invites the Spirit, members can ensure their digital lives reflect their discipleship. The right question isn’t whether tech is good or bad—but how it can help build the kingdom.
