Christian leaders and AI

As we navigate an era of rapid digital transformation, Christian leaders and parents are facing the challenge of understanding and addressing the impact of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). A recent article from Outreach Magazine highlights the growing concern among parents about the role of AI in their children’s lives, and how Christian leaders can play a critical role in guiding their communities through this technological shift.

According to recent research by Barna and Gloo’s AI & the Church Initiative, one-third of U.S. parents are worried about data privacy and security risks associated with their children using AI. Additionally, 25% of parents fear that AI could hinder their child’s ability to think independently. Despite these concerns, many parents admit they are not actively seeking to understand AI, even as their children are rapidly embracing it.

While AI is becoming more integrated into daily life, Christian leaders are largely on the sidelines of this conversation. Only 11% of Christians view their pastors as a source of guidance on AI, and just 14% of pastors consider this issue important enough to address in church. This gap highlights a crucial opportunity for pastors to step in and offer spiritual and theological insights on AI’s implications for faith and life.

Younger generations, particularly Gen Z, are more eager for their pastors to engage with AI. Over half (57%) of Gen Z Christians want to hear from their pastors on how to use AI, presenting an opportunity for churches to disciple younger congregants in a meaningful way.

The digital revolution is reshaping every aspect of life, and Christian leaders have an important role in helping their communities navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. By offering guidance on the spiritual and ethical implications of AI, pastors can ensure that technology is used in a way that aligns with a faithful and purposeful life in Christ.
