Mansfield Church Awarded $2M Grant to Expand Broadband Access

Mansfield’s Church of the New Covenant has been awarded nearly $2 million in funding to enhance broadband access in the local community. The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) announced the $1,999,933.91 grant as part of a broader initiative to bridge the digital divide in underserved areas, improving connectivity for essential services such as work, education, and healthcare.

“This funding will help bridge the digital divide and ensure our communities in Tioga County have a well-connected hub,” said state Sen. Gene Yaw. “I’m pleased to see this significant investment in equitable broadband service in our region.”

The grant, which is funded by the federal Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program, is part of a $45 million initiative supporting high-speed broadband access through community institutions. The Church of the New Covenant will use this funding to enhance internet access in public spaces like schools, libraries, and recreation centers.

Senior Pastor Mark Scafidi expressed gratitude for the project’s approval, noting that it will strengthen the local economy and improve accessibility in the region. The church also livestreams Sunday services on YouTube and Facebook, further highlighting its commitment to digital connectivity.

The PBDA requires grantees to submit detailed quarterly and annual reports on project progress, compliance with federal standards, and sustainability efforts. A final report, required within three months of project completion, will ensure all grant goals have been met before the final 10% of funding is released.

This project is part of a larger effort to enhance community infrastructure and provide equitable access to essential digital services for the residents of Tioga County.
