How Churches Embrace AI, Crypto, and Tech to Support Mission
Churches across the United States are increasingly turning to modern technology—including artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and digital tools—to enhance ministry, connect with congregants, and streamline operations. According to the newly released 2025 State of Church Tech report by Pushpay, this shift isn’t just about convenience—it reflects a deeper integration of faith and technology.
The report, based on a survey of more than 1,700 U.S. church leaders, found that 45% now use AI, marking an 80% increase over the previous year. AI is primarily used for communication tasks such as writing, editing, and graphic design, though nearly one in five leaders also use it for sermon development. Livestreaming, a practice that surged during the pandemic, continues to be widespread, with 90% of churches offering virtual services or events.
Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has also recognized the significance of AI, highlighting it as a challenge to human dignity and justice in his first address to the College of Cardinals. His remarks underscore a growing awareness of both the opportunities and risks AI poses for global institutions, including the Church.
Digital giving is another area undergoing transformation. Online donations are now the most widely adopted digital tool, with 70% of leaders saying technology has increased generosity within their congregations. Interest in accepting cryptocurrency and stock donations is rising—though only 10% currently accept crypto, nearly 40% say it will become strategically important within the next two to three years.
Other tools, like QR codes, are also being used to guide worshippers toward next steps, including giving or community involvement.
With over half of surveyed churches increasing their tech budgets in recent years, the trend is clear: faith communities are not only adopting technology but making it central to their outreach and ministry strategies.
