Finnish Church Explores AI in Worship Services
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Helsinki, Finland, made history by hosting a worship service almost entirely created using artificial intelligence (AI). The event, which featured AI-generated sermons, music, and visuals, was an experimental effort to explore AI’s role in religious settings.
The AI-Generated Worship Service
The service featured digital avatars of the church’s pastors, along with an AI-generated depiction of Jesus and Satan in a visual storytelling format. AI tools composed the sermons, selected Bible readings, and even created pop-style worship songs. The church used platforms such as ChatGPT for writing, Suno for music composition, and Synthesia for video avatars. A former Finnish president, Urho Kekkonen, who passed away in 1986, was also digitally recreated to read scripture.
The service drew over 120 attendees, far surpassing typical midweek attendance. While worshippers found the experience intriguing and entertaining, many noted that the AI-generated elements felt impersonal and lacked emotional warmth.
Technology’s Limits in Worship
Despite AI’s capabilities, clergy members ensured certain religious elements remained untouched. AI was not used for forgiving sins or performing the Eucharist, preserving the sacred nature of these practices. AI-generated content also required human oversight, as it initially refused to create religious dialogues without manual intervention.
Worshippers observed that AI-driven elements, particularly speech patterns and song delivery, felt robotic. Many emphasized the importance of human presence in worship, reinforcing that AI, while useful, cannot replace the spiritual and emotional depth of a human-led service.
AI’s Future in Church Services
Church leaders acknowledged that AI could assist with administrative tasks, sermon preparation, and other support functions, but it is unlikely to replace human pastors. The event highlighted both the possibilities and limitations of AI in faith communities, showing that while technology can enhance certain aspects of worship, the human connection remains irreplaceable.
