AI-powered real-time translation is transforming the way churches engage multilingual congregations. Timberline Church in Colorado has implemented Wordly, an AI translation service, allowing non-English speakers like worship band drummer Miguel Flores to follow sermons in their native language. With a simple code entered on his phone, Flores listens to live Spanish translations, making him feel more welcome and confident in his church community. The technology is currently used by about 200 houses of worship across the U.S., including churches, synagogues, and mosques, offering translations in over 60 languages.

While AI translation fosters inclusivity, some theologians and multicultural ministry experts caution against potential downsides. Katalina Tahaafe-Williams, an Indigenous language advocate, warns that AI could unintentionally discourage migrants and Indigenous groups from maintaining fluency in their native tongues. Additionally, Fuller Theological Seminary professor Kutter Callaway raises concerns about the ethical implications of AI translation, including the accuracy of theological terms and the potential displacement of human translators.

Despite these concerns, Timberline has worked to ensure accuracy by allowing bilingual members to test translations and customize a glossary for faith-specific terms. The affordability of AI translation also makes it an attractive solution for churches, with costs ranging from $105 to $5,000 per year, depending on usage.
