Catholic University Launches AI Ethics Program for Emerging Technologies
Catholic International University (CIU) has introduced a master’s degree program focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, aiming to integrate Catholic principles into technological development. The fully remote university, formerly known as Catholic Distance University, seeks to educate students on the ethical and theological implications of AI, aligning with the Church’s concerns about maintaining human dignity in an era of rapid technological advancement.
Merging Faith and Technology
CIU’s new Master of Science in the Prudential Design of Emerging Technologies is inspired by Pope Francis’ ongoing discussions on AI ethics and the Vatican’s Antiqua et Nova guidelines. The program brings together Catholic AI experts, theologians, and engineers to ensure that AI development prioritizes human well-being over efficiency.
The program was championed by CIU President Sophia Aguirre, an economist with a deep interest in AI’s application in economic and medical fields. Under her leadership, CIU has expanded beyond theology to include liberal arts and ecclesial administration, now adding emerging technologies to its curriculum.
A Unique Approach to AI Education
What sets CIU apart is its integration of technology and theology. Unlike secular universities that separate engineering from philosophy, CIU’s interdisciplinary approach ensures that students—whether technical or philosophical in background—are equipped to design AI solutions that respect human dignity and Catholic values.
Board of Trustees member Michael Pencina, who also serves as chief data scientist at Duke AI Health, emphasized that the program is designed to “prioritize the dignity and well-being of every person” while advancing technology in ethical ways.
By combining faith-based ethics with AI education, CIU hopes to prepare graduates to influence AI development in industries such as healthcare, economics, and public policy, ensuring that these technologies serve humanity rather than devalue it.
