In a message to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Pope Francis emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological advancements must serve humanity by promoting equality, justice, and fraternity, rather than exacerbating global inequalities or spreading misinformation. Delivered by Cardinal Peter Turkson on Jan. 23, the pope’s message addressed leaders in business, government, and media, warning against the misuse of AI and urging ethical oversight in its development and deployment.

Pope Francis highlighted that while the Catholic Church recognizes technological progress as a result of God-given human creativity, AI is not inherently intelligent but a product of human design. He stressed that AI must remain an assistant to humanity, not a substitute for human intelligence or moral responsibility. The pontiff raised concerns about AI’s role in life-and-death situations, such as health care and weapons systems, and its potential to erode truth in the public forum.

The pope called for ethical considerations in AI’s application, stating that “human dignity must never be violated for the sake of efficiency.” He also warned against viewing technological and economic power as the sole determinants of truth and progress. Instead, he emphasized aligning technological advancements with efforts to achieve justice, fraternity, and humane social relations, drawing inspiration from the Second Vatican Council’s teachings.

Ultimately, Pope Francis urged that AI development be guided by ethical principles that prioritize the human person and societal well-being, ensuring that technology serves as a tool to support human vocation and responsibility rather than replacing them.
