PC(USA) Forums Tackle Church Financial Challenges
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is responding to widespread financial challenges faced by its congregations through regional PC(USA) forums aimed at equipping church leaders with strategies to align their missions with financial sustainability. With declining membership and evolving societal roles, many churches are grappling with reduced budgets and attendance. These forums, led by the Ministry Engagement and Support (MES) team, provide a platform for collaboration, experiential learning, and practical solutions.
The inaugural forum, titled “Future of Faith & Finance,” is scheduled for February 22 in Columbus, Ohio, and will bring together leaders from the Presbytery of Scioto Valley and the Presbytery of Muskingum Valley. This event will include worship, workshops, and information-sharing sessions focused on topics such as Special Offerings and Per Capita. MES Director Rev. Dr. John Wilkinson emphasizes the forums’ goal of offering hope and actionable resources, noting that “God has given us all the gifts we need” to navigate these financial challenges.
Rev. Kathleen A. Nice, Executive Presbyter for the Presbytery of Scioto Valley, highlights the timeliness of these forums, especially as many churches continue to face post-pandemic budgetary pressures. Larger and smaller congregations alike are finding it difficult to balance financial realities with their mission commitments. The forum provides an opportunity to share resources and learn from collective experiences.
Participants will also gain insights into the broader financial landscape of the church, with a particular focus on how finance intersects with mission. MES aims to showcase the value of its support services, often described as a “hidden gem” for congregations seeking guidance.
The regional forums complement other initiatives, such as the “Good Futures Accelerator,” which helps churches creatively utilize their property for mission alignment. Together, these efforts underscore PC(USA)’s commitment to fostering sustainability and community impact within its congregations.
