How Northeast Ohio Churches Are Adapting to a Changing Faith Landscape
Protestant churches in Northeast Ohio are adapting to cultural and technological shifts as they navigate a changing spiritual landscape. Nationally, religious affiliation has declined, with only 46% of U.S. adults now identifying as Protestant, compared to 51% in 2007. Faith leaders like Rev. Courtney Clayton Jenkins of South Euclid United Church of Christ and Rev. Micah Holland of Avon United Methodist Church are responding to these trends with innovative approaches to worship and community engagement.
At South Euclid, Jenkins has redefined the traditional concept of “church” by creating a progressive, inclusive, and multigenerational “sacred community.” Programs like mentoring, workforce development, and small group sessions foster growth, with over 175 new members joining this year. Technology has also played a vital role, allowing about 100 weekly attendees to participate virtually, though Jenkins acknowledges the challenge of maintaining personal connections.
Similarly, Avon United Methodist Church has seen its congregation double over the past decade, aided by digital tools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Holland emphasizes that the church is more than a building, using technology to connect while balancing grace and truth when addressing divisive social issues like abortion and LGBTQ inclusion. Both churches aim to create inclusive spaces where differing perspectives coexist, encouraging congregants to grow spiritually alongside one another.
As the role of the church evolves, both pastors remain optimistic about its future. They believe that while worship methods may change, the church’s mission to foster community, offer hospitality, and provide spiritual guidance will remain essential. Their efforts demonstrate how faith-based communities can adapt, grow, and continue to resonate in a rapidly changing world.
