Walnut Creek, California, is now home to Hope Village, an innovative faith-based affordable housing project designed to provide stable living solutions for homeless individuals. Built on a church-owned parking lot, the six-unit development is a collaborative effort led by Hope Solutions. This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing homelessness through a unique approach that combines faith-based values with practical housing solutions.
Each unit at Hope Village features a kitchen, a spacious bathroom, and a living area that doubles as a bedroom. These thoughtfully designed studio-style homes emphasize safety, cleanliness, and hospitality—key components often missing in affordable housing projects, according to housing advocate William Goodwin. “This is affordable housing done right,” Goodwin said, highlighting how this project sets a new standard for addressing homelessness.
Hope Village is the first of its kind in Contra Costa County and serves as a model for similar faith-based affordable housing developments. The project aligns with California laws that allow faith-based organizations to utilize their properties for community-focused housing initiatives. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, donors and church members gathered to celebrate the milestone, with donor Bill Yarborough emphasizing the potential for underused spaces like parking lots to address the housing crisis.
The CEO of Hope Solutions, Deanne Pearn, described Hope Village as a starting point for a broader vision. The organization is already planning a second project in Pittsburg, California, focused on providing housing for homeless youth, with an anticipated launch in 2025. Hope Village not only provides a path to stability for its residents but also serves as a beacon of possibility for communities seeking to address homelessness through collaboration and innovation.
