Church Launches First AI-Powered Fresh Food Access Point in Atlanta
In a pioneering initiative to combat food insecurity, Saint Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta has partnered with the American Heart Association, the NFL, and Nourish and Bloom to install the nation’s first AI-powered smart fridge food market. Located in southwest Atlanta, this program addresses the community’s lack of affordable, nutritious food options by providing a range of fresh produce like sweet potatoes, oranges, and premium options like steak and salmon.
Nourish and Bloom’s Jilea Hemmings, who spearheaded the project, believes that AI technology can transform food accessibility. The high-tech refrigerators, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., are designed to be accessible to residents facing transportation challenges and limited food options in the area. “This is the first church in the nation to do this,” Hemmings said, underscoring the innovation behind the project.
The $40,000 cost of each smart fridge was funded by the NFL, furthering its commitment to community welfare. The American Heart Association also plays a vital role in supporting local health by promoting physical activity and nutrition. Reverend Eric Thomas, pastor of St. Peter’s, expressed hopes to incorporate counseling services alongside the food market, addressing holistic wellness for the community.
Launching on Sunday with operational hours from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., this initiative marks a significant step toward reducing food deserts and enhancing health through accessible, nutritious food options.
