AI St. Peter's Basilica

Microsoft President Brad Smith will soon reveal an innovative AI project aimed at enhancing exploration of St. Peter’s Basilica, as reported by Catholic News Agency. This collaboration, titled The Basilica of St. Peter’s: AI-Enhanced Experience, involves Microsoft and the Fabric of St. Peter, the organization responsible for the basilica’s preservation. The project will be presented in a press conference at the Vatican on November 11.

This AI initiative is part of Microsoft’s AI for Cultural Heritage program, which was launched in 2019. The program has developed other projects, such as the digital reconstruction of Ancient Olympia in Greece and a detailed 3D model of Mont-Saint-Michel in France, providing immersive experiences that allow global audiences to engage with historic sites like never before.

The Vatican has been at the forefront of ethical discussions surrounding artificial intelligence. Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of responsible AI development, dedicating his 2024 World Day of Peace message to the topic. At the recent G7 summit, the pope advocated for international regulation of AI to safeguard human dignity.

The ethical framework for this technology, known as the Rome Call for AI Ethics, was introduced by the Pontifical Academy for Life. It emphasizes values such as transparency, accountability, and inclusion. Microsoft signed the Rome Call in 2020, with Brad Smith joining other tech leaders in committing to these principles. This partnership with Microsoft underscores the Vatican’s goal to ethically guide AI’s development while using it to foster cultural and spiritual connection.

Through this new AI-enhanced experience, visitors to St. Peter’s Basilica will gain a deeper appreciation of its rich history and artistry, bridging ancient heritage with future technology. For more details on this project, visit the original article on Catholic News Agency.
