At the European Christian Internet Conference (ECIC) held in Bossey, Switzerland, Christian communicators gathered to examine the ethical and practical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in church communication. With about 30 participants from churches and faith-based organizations across Europe, the event focused on how AI can serve the church’s mission while preserving human connection and truth.

Keynote speakers delved into the ethical concerns surrounding AI and shared practical uses, such as AI in text generation and image editing. Despite AI’s growing presence, many churches have yet to engage in discussions about it, even as their members use AI privately. Agnieszka Godfrejów-Tarnogórska, ECIC president and communications officer for the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland, emphasized the challenge of maintaining truth in the digital age, especially as communicators grapple with the rise of fake news.

Personal exchanges were a highlight of the event, where participants discussed AI, shared communication projects, and reflected on the need for human connection. Godfrejów-Tarnogórska reminded attendees that AI cannot replace the spiritual and emotional depth of human interaction, particularly when communicating about faith and community.

The conference underscored the importance of combining digital innovation with the enduring need for face-to-face connection and spiritual reflection. AI may enhance church communication, but true witness requires both technology and human engagement.
